When Governor Ademola Adeleke announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Accord Party in late 2025, many observers questioned the political wisdom of such a move. Yet, as the Osun State chapter of the Accord has now formally confirmed his nomination through the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) portal, one thing becomes increasingly clear: the governor is well-positioned for a successful re-election bid on August 8, 2026. In fact, all indicators suggest that Adeleke will not only win but do so decisively.

A Strong Track Record Speaks Volumes

First and foremost, Governor Adeleke’s performance during his first tenure as governor cannot be overlooked. Since assuming office in 2022, he has made tangible strides in critical areas that matter most to Osun residents: infrastructure development, workers’ welfare, and security. These are not empty promises or theoretical achievements they are real, visible improvements that the people of Osun have witnessed firsthand.

Unlike rhetoric and campaign speeches that fade after elections, Adeleke’s administration has delivered concrete results. From road rehabilitation projects that have eased transportation across the state to the timely payment of workers’ salaries, a contrast to the struggles many states face, the governor has demonstrated a commitment to the welfare of public servants and citizens alike. In an era where governance is increasingly judged by tangible outcomes rather than grand promises, Adeleke’s record gives him a significant advantage.

The Momentum of Incumbency

Incumbency is a powerful political asset, and Governor Adeleke possesses it fully. He does not approach the election as a challenger seeking to prove his capabilities; rather, he comes as an incumbent with a demonstrated record. This matters enormously. Voters in Osun have had the opportunity to see him in action, to evaluate his performance directly, and to assess whether he has kept his promises. For a significant portion of the electorate, the answer appears to be affirmative.

This incumbency advantage is further reinforced by the strategic move to the Accord. While some may have viewed the defection with skepticism initially, it has proven to be a masterstroke.

The Accord, which had been searching for a flagship candidate capable of presenting a credible alternative to the two major parties, has found in Adeleke exactly what it needed. Conversely, Adeleke has found in Accord a party infrastructure willing to mobilize fully behind his candidacy without the internal conflicts that plagued his tenure in the PDP.

INEC Recognition: The Final Seal of Legitimacy

The confirmation by INEC that Governor Adeleke’s nomination has been successfully uploaded to their portal is more than administrative formality it is a seal of legitimacy that neutralizes potential legal obstacles and factional challenges.

This recognition ensures that his candidacy is on solid legal and procedural footing, eliminating the kind of uncertainties that could undermine a campaign.

Interestingly, despite attempts by disgruntled elements within the Accord Party to challenge his candidacy, these efforts have been systematically refuted and dismissed by the state chapter leadership.

The fact that such challenges have not gained traction speaks to the strength of Adeleke’s position within the party and his ability to command respect and unity among party members.

A Party Energized and Ready

The Accord Party’s mobilization efforts across Osun State have been nothing short of impressive. With committees being inaugurated across towns, villages, and settlements, the grassroots machinery is in place.

More importantly, Adeleke’s defection to the party has triggered membership surges nationwide, indicating that the Accord Party is gaining momentum and credibility as a genuine political force.

This energy and organizational readiness should not be underestimated. Elections are won not just on the strength of an individual leader but also on the capacity of the party machinery to mobilize voters effectively.

With the Accord Party operating at full capacity in Osun, Adeleke has the organizational support needed to translate his popularity into votes across all local government areas of the state.

The Opposition’s Diminished Prospects

The All Progressives Congress (APC), which previously governed Osun State, has been plagued by internal divisions and appears unable to mount a formidable challenge. The party’s repeated attempts to exploit factional disputes or legal technicalities have yielded little results. With Adeleke’s formal INEC recognition and the Accord Party’s solid organizational footing, the APC’s traditional strategies have become largely ineffective.

It is difficult to see how the APC, fractured and struggling with its own internal contradictions, can effectively counter an incumbent governor with a documented record of performance, the backing of a unified party machine, and the legal certainty that comes with INEC recognition.

A Vision of Continuity and Progress

Governor Adeleke has framed his re-election bid not as a return to old politics but as a continuation of progress. This is a powerful narrative in a state where citizens are eager to move forward. The governor’s emphasis on achievements in infrastructure, workers’ welfare, and security combined with his implicit contrast to what he calls the “dark days” under previous administrations resonates with voters who have experienced the difference his leadership has made.

This narrative of continuity and progress is far more compelling than the largely negative campaigns based on personal attacks or attempts to resurrect old grievances. Voters, increasingly sophisticated in their political judgment, prefer to evaluate leaders on what they have delivered and what they promise to deliver.

The Verdict: Success Is Likely
All things considered, the evidence strongly suggests that Governor Adeleke will do well in the August 8, 2026, governorship election. He enters the race as an incumbent with a credible track record, backed by a unified and energized party machine, with legal certainty through INEC recognition, and facing an opposition that appears fractured and ineffectual.

Of course, no election is predetermined, and complacency would be foolish. However, based on performance, organizational readiness, legal standing, and the weakness of opposition, the fundamentals favor Adeleke decisively.

As Osun State approaches this crucial election, voters would do well to focus on records of service and visionary leadership the measures by which Adeleke stands well-equipped to secure another term and continue the journey of progress he has begun.

The people of Osun deserve leadership that delivers results, and on that measure, Governor Adeleke has already proven his worth.
