Comrade James Onifade has condemned the alleged killing of Kolade Eluyera in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area, describing it as a disturbing assault on peace and democracy in Osun State.

Eluyera, reportedly a member of the Accord and son of the party’s Women Leader in the LGA, was allegedly attacked and killed by suspected political thugs in the early hours of Friday. If politically motivated, Onifade said, the incident signals a dangerous shift ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

“Politics should never become a battlefield,” Onifade stated. “Osun has a reputation for peaceful, idea-driven elections. We must not trade that for violence, intimidation, or bloodshed.”

He stressed that political opponents are not enemies and that democracy thrives on tolerance, healthy competition, and respect for differing views. “No political ambition is worth the life of any citizen,” he said.

Onifade warned that rising reports of intimidation, destruction of campaign materials, and violent clashes among party loyalists threaten the peace Osun is known for. He urged security agencies to investigate the Ikire killing swiftly and professionally, insisting that anyone found culpable must face justice regardless of political affiliation.

He also charged political leaders to rein in their supporters and reject inflammatory conduct. “Leadership is about protecting lives, not just winning elections. Families should not mourn because of politics. Citizens should not live in fear for supporting a party.”

As the governorship election nears, Onifade called for issue-based campaigns and peaceful engagement, saying Osun people deserve to vote without intimidation. “Osun belongs to everyone. Its peace must be protected at all costs. Violence has no place in democracy, and there must never be politics of bitterness in our state.”
