In the wake of the devastating rainstorm that struck Osogbo and its environs on Saturday, March 28, 2026, leaving homes damaged, properties destroyed, and lives lost, the Osogbo Accord Media Force (OAMF) has applauded the swift and compassionate response of Governor Ademola Adeleke.
Governor Adeleke personally visited victims receiving treatment at key hospitals in Osogbo, including Asubiaro General Hospital, Osun State University Teaching Hospital, and the affected police barracks around Oke Fia.
Accompanied by the Secretary to the State Government and members of the State Executive Council, the governor offered prayers, commiserated with the injured, and expressed deep sadness over the tragic loss of lives.
At Asubiaro General Hospital, Governor Adeleke condoled with the family of the late Mrs. Jemilat Tijani, who sadly succumbed to injuries sustained in the Orita Sabo area. In a heartfelt gesture that has touched many, the governor announced a full university scholarship for her son, Farouk Tijani, through Osun State University. He directed the Secretary to the State Government to ensure the scholarship takes effect once the admission process is completed.
This compassionate act demonstrates a leader who does not merely sympathise from afar but steps in to ease the burden on grieving families. It is leadership with a human face—practical, immediate, and personal.
The governor also used the occasion to highlight the global reality of climate change, noting similar destructive weather events in North America, Europe, and other parts of the world. He reaffirmed his administration’s long-standing commitment to climate mitigation, pointing to the numerous local and international awards Osun State has received for its proactive policies.
Plans for immediate community sensitisation on climate threats were also announced.
Deputy Governor Prince Kola Adewusi had earlier led an on-the-spot assessment of the affected areas alongside executive council members and officials of the Osun State Emergency Management Agency (OSEMA). The governor further assured victims of broader support, revealing that the state is reaching out to the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the National Economic Council for additional succour, while directing the Ministry of Works to clear affected roads and prevent further incidents.
OAMF describes these actions as exemplary and people-centred. “Governor Adeleke has once again proven that he is the Governor of the People,” the group stated. “In a time when many leaders issue distant statements, he showed up, listened, prayed with victims, and took concrete steps to support the bereaved. The scholarship for the son of the deceased is not just aid—it is a lasting legacy of empathy and responsibility.”
While natural disasters like this rainstorm remind us of the increasing threats posed by climate change, Governor Adeleke’s response stands out for its urgency and humanity. From hospital visits to promises of compensation and infrastructure intervention, his administration has moved swiftly to bring relief to those affected.
OAMF commends the governor for prioritising the welfare of Osun residents above all else. In a nation where citizens often feel neglected during crises, Adeleke’s hands-on approach serves as a shining example of responsive governance.
The group urges residents to heed the upcoming sensitisation campaigns and calls on all stakeholders to support efforts aimed at building greater resilience against future weather events.
