…Calls for True Reform and the End of Impunity
As a dedicated advocate for good governance, accountability, and the welfare of the Nigerian people, I extend my heartfelt congratulations and warm welcome to Mr. Olatunji Disu on his appointment as the Acting Inspector-General of Police. Your elevation to this exalted position by President Bola Tinubu on February 24, 2026, marks a significant moment for the Nigeria Police Force and our nation’s quest for justice, security, and public trust.
Your immediate declaration that the era of impunity in the Nigeria Police Force is over is bold, timely, and deeply resonant with the cries of millions of Nigerians who have endured years of misconduct, corruption, and abuse at the hands of those sworn to protect them. These words inspire hope and signal a potential turning point.
However, welcome words must be matched by decisive actions. The people of Osun State, the Southwest region, and indeed the entire country are watching closely. Police brutality and related impunities remain rampant, particularly in Osun, where incidents of excessive force continue to undermine public confidence. Recent cases, including the brutalization of civilians and fatal shootings by officers, demand swift and impartial investigations. Four years after the #EndSARS movement, reports of unlawful detentions, extortion, and extrajudicial actions persist. Acting IGP Disu, I urge you to launch thorough probes into these abuses in Osun and across the nation, ensuring perpetrators face justice without favoritism. This will be the true test of your pledge to end impunity.
The situation in Osun is further complicated by ongoing political tensions that threaten the peace and stability of the state. Former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, now serving as Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, stands accused by the current administration and concerned citizens of interfering in local government affairs, withholding allocations, and orchestrating disturbances to destabilize governance. These allegations, including claims of fueling calls for a state of emergency and using brute force in the past, have created an atmosphere of unrest and division. While such matters are often denied as mere propaganda, the resulting paralysis in local administration affects ordinary Osun residents who deserve uninterrupted peace and development.
As the nation’s chief law enforcer, your role is crucial in ensuring the police remain neutral and are not weaponized in political contests. I call on you to investigate these impunities impartially, holding all parties accountable under the law. True leadership means rising above bias ethnic, political, or otherwise and delivering justice equitably.
A matter of immediate concern is the continued sealing of Amotekun Corps offices in Osun State by police authorities in October 2025. This regional security architecture, established to combat banditry, kidnapping, and other threats, is indispensable for the Southwest’s safety. The raid, arrests, and lockdown have weakened our collective defenses, allowing criminal elements to exploit the vacuum. Governor Ademola Adeleke has appealed for the offices to be reopened, and the Osun State House of Assembly has condemned the action as politically motivated. Banditry cannot be allowed to take root in Osun or the broader Southwest.
I earnestly implore you to facilitate the immediate reopening of these Amotekun offices. Collaboration between federal police and regional outfits like Amotekun is essential to restoring security and preventing further insecurity.
In conclusion, your tenure presents a golden opportunity to rewrite the narrative that has long painted the Nigeria Police Force as corrupt and untrustworthy. Lead with unwavering integrity, shun all forms of bias, and prioritize the good of the people. Motivate your officers through fair treatment, enforce discipline rigorously, and treat every Nigerian with the dignity they deserve. By doing so, you can transform public perception and build a police force worthy of our great nation.
The people of Osun, Oyo, the Southwest, and Nigeria at large stand ready to support genuine reform. May your leadership mark the definitive end of impunity and usher in an era of justice, security, and renewed trust.
