The Advocacy for Good Governance in Nigeria (TAGGIN) has condemned the arrest of Comrade James Onifade, describing the development as unlawful and a troubling incident that raises concerns about the protection of civic participation and democratic engagement in the ongoing electoral process.

TAGGIN said Comrade Onifade is a dedicated columnist, advocate for good governance and a strong voice for issues affecting citizens. The organisation noted that his activities have consistently focused on promoting accountability, good governance and better judicial reforms in Nigeria.

TAGGIN described the arrest as unjustifiable, particularly given the circumstances surrounding his presence at the location, and called on the relevant authorities to immediately clarify the basis for his detention.

The group urged security agencies to respect the fundamental rights of citizens, particularly during an election period when civic participation, observation and peaceful engagement are essential to the credibility of the democratic process.

TAGGIN further called for transparency in the handling of the matter, insisting that no citizen should be unlawfully detained for offering legitimate assistance to election observers or participating in activities aimed at supporting a credible electoral process.

The organisation maintained that Comrade James Onifade remains a committed advocate for good governance and citizens’ rights, and urged authorities to release him immediately if there is no lawful basis for his continued detention.
