As Osun State inches closer to the August 15 governorship election, the responsibility of the Nigeria Police Force has never been more crucial. Beyond securing lives and property, the police must reassure citizens that they can exercise their democratic rights without fear, intimidation, or harassment.
The recent visit of the Inspector-General of Police to Osun provided an opportunity for all stakeholders to present their concerns over the security situation in the state. Having listened to different perspectives, the expectation of the people is that the IGP will now ensure that his directives are reflected in the conduct of officers and men of the Osun State Police Command.
Recent political developments and allegations surrounding the handling of security matters have heightened public anxiety. Whether those concerns are justified or not, the perception of bias is damaging to public confidence. The only way to restore trust is through professional, impartial, and transparent policing that treats every political actor equally before the law.
Ahead of the election, there should be no room for selective justice. Individuals involved in political violence, regardless of their political affiliation or social status, must be investigated, arrested, and prosecuted in accordance with the law. The police must remain neutral arbiters of law and order, not participants in the political contest.
The Osun Commissioner of Police and all officers deployed for election duties must understand that their loyalty is to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and not to any political party or interest group. Every operational decision taken before, during, and after the election should reflect fairness, professionalism, and respect for democratic principles.
The Inspector-General of Police has both the authority and the responsibility to ensure discipline within the ranks. Calling his men to order in Osun is not only necessary for the credibility of the police, but also essential for the peaceful conduct of the governorship election. The people of Osun deserve an atmosphere free from fear, violence, and intimidation, where every eligible voter can cast their ballot without hindrance.
As August 15 approaches, the hope of the people is simple: let the police stand on the side of justice, uphold the rule of law, and protect the sanctity of the electoral process. A peaceful election will not only strengthen democracy in Osun State, but also reinforce public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.
