The Advocacy for Good Governance in Nigeria (TAGGIN) has strongly condemned the brutal attack on Hon. Ajibola Asimiyu, Chairman of the Accord Party in Osogbo Local Government, describing it as a cowardly act with no place in a democracy.
Hon. Asimiyu is widely respected in Osogbo for his restraint and commitment to constructive politics. For a leader known for composure and civility to be targeted in such a violent manner signals a dangerous escalation ahead of the governorship election.
This attack revives painful memories of similar violence in 2018, including incidents involving the late Alhaji Dieko, Hon. Segun Odekilekun, and Alhaji Sikiru Were around Alekuwodo. The recurrence of intimidation tactics points to a troubling pattern by actors unwilling to contest on ideas.
TAGGIN warns that threats, vandalism of campaign materials, and violent rhetoric only erode public trust. Leadership is defined by service, accountability, and respect for opposing views, not by force or bullying.
Citizens deserve assurance that political ambition will not override basic decency. If aspirants cannot uphold civility on the campaign trail, the public has a right to question the kind of administration they will run.
Yet democracy remains stronger than fear. The will of Osun voters on election day is supreme. No campaign of harassment can override the ballot.
TAGGIN prays for Hon. Ajibola Asimiyu’s full and swift recovery. We urge security agencies to investigate the attack thoroughly and bring perpetrators to justice. We also call on all political actors to commit to peaceful, issue-based campaigns that respect the dignity of every candidate and voter.
