Dear Sir,
I write this open letter with deep concern over credible reports of abuse of police and security powers in Osun State, especially in Ikire and Irewole Local Government Area, as we approach the August 15, 2026 Governorship Election.
Sir, democracy is under threat in Osun. The people are witnessing what appears to be coordinated political intimidation involving compromised security operatives and political thugs. Despite the recent redeployment of the Commissioner of Police in Osun, the pattern of abuse has continued.
Our trust in the Nigeria Police Force is being eroded daily. When Mr. Taofeek Akinyemi, a victim of a gun attack, is arrested after reporting the crime and releasing video evidence, it sends a dangerous message. When a reported “hit list” of 46 opposition leaders circulates with plans to arrest and transfer them to Abuja before the election, it suggests an attempt to silence dissent and manipulate the electoral process.
KEY CONCERNS
1. Unlawful Arrest of Mr. Taofeek Akinyemi
On August 1, 2026, Mr. Akinyemi of Ikire was arrested by SCID Osogbo. He had earlier been shot multiple times by suspected political thugs at his shop opposite DCool Hotel, Ikire, and had lodged complaints with Ikire Police Division, DSS Osogbo, and AIG Zone 11.
His arrest reportedly followed his decision to publish video evidence of the attack. Turning a victim into a suspect violates Section 35 of the 1999 Constitution and discourages citizens from reporting political violence.
2. Alleged “Hit List” of 46 Opposition Leaders
We have credible information of a planned operation to arrest 46 named opposition figures and move them out of Osun before the election. This includes party officials and community leaders such as Kola Akinpelu, Bankole Ojo, Adeloba Fatai, Adegboye Atanda Monsuru [Accord Party Chairman], and others. The aim appears to be to weaken opposition structures and suppress voter turnout.
3. Alleged Compromise of Security Personnel
Names mentioned in connection with these operations include Ola Abbas [NSCDC], Adeboye Opeyemi, and an operative known as “General”. We call for immediate investigation to ensure all security personnel act within the Police Act, NSCDC Act, and their code of conduct.
OUR DEMANDS
In defense of democracy, rule of law, and peaceful elections, we urge you to:
1. Order the immediate release of Mr. Taofeek Akinyemi, or arraign him within 24 hours if any charge exists.
2. Halt all politically motivated arrests and harassment of the 46 named persons and other citizens.
3. Institute an independent panel to investigate the Ikire incident and the conduct of named security personnel.
4. Redeploy neutral officers to Osun, with priority on Ikire/Irewole LGA, and withdraw partisan personnel.
5. Deploy monitoring teams from Force Headquarters to oversee police conduct before, during, and after the election.
6. Guarantee the safety and free movement of all candidates, party agents, and voters.
Sir, the eyes of Nigerians and the international community are on Osun. This is an opportunity for the Nigeria Police Force to demonstrate neutrality, professionalism, and commitment to the Constitution.
We are ready to provide witnesses, evidence, and further information to support these claims.
