Dear Mr. President,

I write with deep concern for the peace and democratic stability of Osun State as preparations intensify for the August 15 governorship election.

Recent reports of gunshots around Oke-Fia, Owode, and Aisu areas of Osogbo have heightened fear among residents. These incidents raise serious questions about the conduct of certain political actors. At a time when Nigerians already face economic hardship and insecurity, Osun people should not be subjected to additional fear from political activities.

Elections should be periods of engagement, policy debate and healthy competition—not moments of intimidation. Yet many residents worry about a growing pattern of harassment linked to opposition activities. Instead of persuading voters with vision and programmes, some actors appear focused on creating an atmosphere of fear.

Osun people are politically enlightened. History shows that intimidation does not win elections. It erodes public trust and damages the credibility of those linked to such tactics.

Mr. President, politics must be about service, leadership and development. It must never be reduced to threats or violence. Such actions undermine democratic values and threaten the peace Osun is known for.

There is also concern about the handling of political incidents by security agencies. Security institutions must remain neutral, professional and focused on protecting lives and property. Any perception of bias weakens public confidence and emboldens those who seek to disrupt peace.

I therefore respectfully call on Your Excellency to intervene in the interest of peace and democracy. I also urge the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the Inspector-General of Police and all security agencies to take proactive steps to prevent any breakdown of law and order in Osun.

This appeal is urgent following allegations by Governor Ademola Adeleke that suspected political thugs linked to the APC were behind coordinated attacks in parts of the state. He has called on the Presidency and security agencies to act swiftly.

Regardless of affiliation, every allegation must be investigated and anyone found culpable must face the law. No individual or group should be allowed to threaten the peace of Osun for political gain.

I urge all political leaders to take responsibility for their supporters and publicly discourage acts that can disrupt peace. The people of Osun deserve campaigns, not chaos. They deserve persuasion, not intimidation.

To the people of Osun, remain calm, law-abiding and vigilant. Do not allow fear to disrupt your daily life. Continue your lawful business and protect the peace of your communities.

Political power is temporary, but the consequences of violence can last for generations. Mr. President, history will remember those who stood for peace when it mattered most. This is one of those moments.

Let us choose peace over provocation, dialogue over intimidation and democracy over disorder.

Anything contrary to this is unnecessary, unacceptable, and dangerous to our democracy.

Signed:
Comrade James Onifade
Advocate for Good Governance and Judicial Reform
