The newly posted Commissioner of Police in Osun State, CP Ibrahim D. Zungura, has pledged to strengthen security and rebuild public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force in the state.
CP Zungura, who arrived in Osogbo on Monday, paid a courtesy visit to the Governor at the Government House, accompanied by senior police officers.
Speaking during the visit, CP Zungura commended the government and people of Osun for sustaining peace.
“I have seen since my arrival this morning that the government and people of the state are very peaceful,” he said. “Although some issues occur, the state is generally peaceful.”
He described his predecessor as a “course mate and friend” who “did well to maintain peace and equality,” and assured that he would “add more value to what he has done.”
The new CP said his priority over the next 3 to 5 months is to make residents believe that “police are your friends.”
“I will carry everybody along so that you believe that the police are your friends,” he stated. “I need your support, Your Excellency. I will work with you, and I will work with the people of Osun.”
In his response, the Governor said CP Zungura’s posting came “at a very auspicious time” when “the police-civilian relationship is at its lowest ebb and the trust level is very disturbing.”
The Governor called for urgent efforts to rebuild public trust and assured that the state government is “ready to support police operations without any strings attached.”
“What we seek is fair policing and the kind of policing that will make people feel that a new sheriff is in town,” the Governor added.
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to collaboration for a safer Osun.
