The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has earned a reputation over the years as a disciplined and professional officer. He is expected to rise above political interests in the discharge of his constitutional responsibilities. That reputation is one many Nigerians, particularly the people of Osun State, still hold dear.
It is therefore important to note that recent developments have given rise to the perception that the Nigeria Police Force is taking sides in the political affairs of Osun State.
Recent developments in Osun have generated concern following public comments made during the Inspector-General’s visit to the state. The comments addressed allegations that wanted suspects were taking refuge within the Government House.
While the police have a duty to investigate criminal allegations wherever they may lead, such sensitive security matters are better handled through established investigative channels. Addressing them in a manner that can fuel political controversy does not serve the public interest.
The perception of impartiality is as important as impartiality itself. Once the public begins to view law enforcement through a political lens, confidence in the justice system is gradually eroded. The Nigeria Police Force must not only be fair, but must also be seen to be fair. This is especially critical in a politically sensitive environment such as Osun State.
The situation in Osun demands professionalism, restraint, and strict adherence to the rule of law. Security agencies should pursue anyone found to have violated the law, regardless of political affiliation. However, such actions must be backed by credible evidence and due process.
Where sufficient evidence exists against any suspect, the law already provides the appropriate mechanism for arrest and prosecution. There is no need for public pronouncements capable of inflaming political tensions.
At a time when the state requires peace and stability, every action taken by security institutions should inspire confidence rather than suspicion. The office of the Inspector-General carries enormous responsibility, and every statement made by its occupant has far-reaching implications for public trust and national security.
The people of Osun continue to look up to the Inspector-General as a fair-minded officer committed to justice. Preserving that image requires remaining above partisan politics and ensuring that policing is guided solely by professionalism, neutrality, and respect for the rule of law.
That is the standard expected of the nation’s highest-ranking police officer, and it is the standard that should continue to define his leadership.
