Amid ongoing political turbulence and a wave of defections within Nigerian political parties ahead of the 2027 presidential election, Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, has signaled a potential move from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the latter as his “preferred destination.”
Addressing journalists on Tuesday after a closed-door meeting with an ADC delegation led by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, at the Government House in Bauchi, Governor Mohammed expressed frustration over failed reconciliation efforts within his current party.
“We have found ourselves in a very serious situation. I have done everything possible to ensure reconciliation, but it has not worked,” he said.
“We set up committees at both the national and state levels to explore all options, including even the APC, but sadly, we discovered that we are not wanted there.”
The governor noted that the PDP currently lacks effective leadership, placing significant pressure on him and his supporters to consider alternative platforms ahead of future elections, particularly in 2027.
He emphasized that discussions with the ADC are still ongoing, with stakeholders being engaged to avoid any missteps.
“As of now, the ADC appears to be a very welcoming and acceptable platform. However, we have not concluded discussions. We are engaging stakeholders to ensure we do not make mistakes,” Mohammed stated.
“We are amenable to joining the ADC if certain conditions are met. As of now, they are our preferred destination,” he added.
Reports indicate that a final decision on the defection could be reached soon, with a formal declaration possibly scheduled for Thursday.
The move comes as the PDP grapples with prolonged internal divisions, including factional disputes involving key figures.
Governor Mohammed, who chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum, has been at the center of speculation regarding his political future. Earlier rumors of a potential move to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) did not materialize, with the governor citing a lack of acceptance from that quarter.
The ADC delegation’s visit and the governor’s comments have heightened political discussions in Bauchi and across the country, as observers watch how this development might affect opposition dynamics ahead of upcoming elections.
As consultations continue, the governor stressed the need for a careful and inclusive process to ensure any transition benefits his supporters and aligns with broader political goals.
