Osun State may be heading for a total shutdown as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Osun State Council, has fixed midnight of Sunday, November 8, 2026 for a three-day sympathy strike over the continued withholding of statutory allocations meant for local government councils in the state.

The NLC said the strike will end at midnight on Wednesday, November 11, 2026, and will be followed by peaceful picketing of all United Bank for Africa (UBA) branches across Osun State from Thursday, November 12.

The decision was contained in a communiqué issued after the State Executive Council (SEC)-in-Session meeting held in Osogbo, and signed by the State Chairman, Comrade Christopher Arapasopo.

According to the Congress, the prolonged funding crisis has crippled the financial capacity of local government councils to discharge their constitutional responsibilities and meet obligations to workers.

The crisis stems from the leadership tussle in Osun local governments, with both the APC chairmen elected in October 2022 and the PDP chairmen elected on February 22, 2025 laying claim to the councils following Appeal Court verdicts of February 10 and June 13, 2025, leading to the withholding and disputed disbursement of LG allocations.

The NLC acknowledged that Governor Ademola Adeleke had intervened by paying local government workers their net salaries without deductions, but insisted that the intervention cannot replace the regular release of statutory allocations.

The communiqué reads in part: “The SEC-in-Session warns that failure by the relevant authorities to meet these demands within the stipulated seven-day ultimatum will leave the NLC, Osun State Council, with no alternative but to implement the lawful industrial actions directed by the SEC-in-Session, in solidarity with the affected Local Government workers.”

The Congress stressed that the planned actions are not targeted at the people of Osun, but are lawful measures to demand an end to the withholding of LG funds.

It disclosed that mobilisation is ongoing with the support of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) and South-West Councils to ensure total compliance.
