By Comrade James Onifade

The recent attack on Hon Ajibola Asimiyu, Chairman of Accord in Osogbo Local Government, is a disturbing and condemnable act that has no place in a democratic society. Every well-meaning citizen, regardless of political affiliation, should reject this cowardly act and demand justice.

Reports indicate the perpetrators came with a clear intention to carry out their evil mission. However, by the grace of God, Hon Ajibola Asimiyu survived what could have resulted in a tragic loss of life. The actions of those responsible reveal a dangerous level of desperation that should alarm all lovers of peace and democracy.

Political disagreements must never degenerate into violence, intimidation, or assassination attempts. Democracy is built on tolerance, healthy competition, and the freedom of citizens to choose leaders through the ballot box. Any attempt to silence or eliminate political opponents through violence stands in direct opposition to democratic values.

No amount of thuggery, intimidation, or criminal violence can legitimately determine who governs Osun State. The power to decide the next governor rests solely with the electorate.

It is the votes of the people—not bullets, fear, or hired attackers—that will determine the future leadership of our state.

Those who imagine that political violence can alter the will of the people are mistaken. Such actions only weaken public confidence in the democratic process and threaten the peace and stability that Osun State is known for.

I therefore call on all political stakeholders to conduct themselves responsibly and place the interest of the people above personal ambition. Elections should be contests of ideas, programmes, and visions for development, not arenas for violence and criminality.

Most importantly, I urge security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security operatives, to carry out a thorough, professional, and unbiased investigation into this attack. The perpetrators must be identified, arrested, and prosecuted. Beyond the attackers themselves, every individual who financed, sponsored, or facilitated this criminal act must also be brought to justice. No one should be above the law.

As we approach another electoral season, let this incident serve as a reminder that democracy can only flourish where peace, tolerance, and respect for human life prevail. Violence is not a political strategy; it is a crime. Assassination attempts are not instruments of democracy; they are attacks on democracy itself.

I wish Hon Ajibola Asimiyu a speedy and full recovery and pray that Osun State continues to reject the politics of fear in favour of the politics of ideas, service, and development.
